TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union’s Arizona affiliate has filed a legal claim against the Tucson Police Department over the Oct. 8 detention of two immigrants during a traffic stop.
The claim is a precursor to a possible lawsuit. It demands $250,000 for each man and alleges the detention violated their constitutional rights, including protections against unreasonable seizures.
City Attorney Mike Rankin says he’s aware of the ACLU’s claim, but it’s the city’s policy not to comment on pending litigation.
Tucson Police Chief Roberto Villasenor has said officers must notify the Border Patrol when immigrants cannot produce legal ID.
Police said they pulled over a car because it had no license plate light.
The detentions prompted a protest during which police used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
