DENMARK, S.C. (AP) - The pink and white dogwood trees are beginning to bloom, marking the opening of the 34th annual Dogwood Festival in Denmark.

The two-day event starts off with its traditional prayer breakfast at 9 a.m. Friday at Denmark Technical College. At 6 p.m., a diabetes awareness walk is being held at the Voorhees College Track in Denmark. Diabetes cases are said to be twice the national average in Bamberg County.

The festival continues in downtown Denmark Friday evening from 6 to 10 p.m. with family-friendly entertainment.

On Saturday, the Dogwood parade starts at 11 a.m. and continues in the city center with food booths, rides for children and entertainment.
