SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Enthusiasts say they want Illinois to acquire a new wildlife habitat, strengthen conservation laws and expand the number of people served by the state’s Department of Natural Resources.

Those are the results of a survey of priorities that emerged this month at Conservation Congress 2014.

Natural Resources Director Marc Miller says Conservation Congress allows direct discussion with constituencies of the agency, which oversees outdoor areas in Illinois.

This year’s event had the theme, “Charting a Course to Protect and Preserve Our Natural Resources.”

It included panel discussions on the Natural Resources Department’s role and the future of the state’s “apex predators” - or those at the top of the food chain.

Webcasts of both days of the congress are available online.
