ST. LOUIS (AP) - An Illinois man has pleaded not guilty to a federal indictment’s charges that he bilked more than $40,000 from a St. Louis union local he was heading.

Fifty-one-year-old Anthony Davis of O’Fallon, Ill., was arraigned Monday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis on the indictment’s count of embezzlement of labor union funds.

Federal prosecutors say Davis’ misconduct took place from January 2009 through last June while he served as president of the Mail Handlers Local 314.

A message seeking comment was left Tuesday with his attorney, Paul D’Agrosa.

Davis is free on his own recognizance and scheduled to appear in court for a hearing May 28.

The felony count is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
