DETROIT (AP) - Detroit’s lighting department says it’s finished restoring power to all of the 21 public schools that lost service in a storm, keeping 10 of them closed for two days.

City officials blamed damage from strong winds that swept through Detroit for the power outage that closed the Detroit Public Schools buildings and darkened traffic signals.

Winds also knocked out power this week in some other parts of the state.

Also Wednesday, the lighting department said it’s finished installing new street lights in two demonstration areas. The work began about 10 weeks ago.

The Detroit News reports that Detroit has installed about 5,000 fixtures in the areas and plans to begin work as early as Thursday to put them in six more ZIP codes by year’s end.
