SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Authorities in Salem, Ore., say a police officer responding to a domestic violence call shot and critically wounded a man who reportedly was coming at him with a knife.

The Marion County district attorney’s office says 47-year-old Michael Conley was hit in the head by a shot fired by Officer David Baker. Conley was reported in critical condition at a Salem hospital late Wednesday. The officer was unhurt.

The district attorney’s office says Conley refused to obey the officer’s orders to drop the knife.

Prosecutors say the investigation shows Conley had been involved in a domestic dispute with his wife early Wednesday morning and she called 911 after she was threatened with harm. The DA’s office says the woman was not injured.

Baker has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
