HONOLULU (AP) - A federal grand jury has indicted the operator of Oahu’s only landfill on charges related to its spilling of sewage and medical waste into the ocean during heavy rains several years ago.
The indictment handed down Wednesday names Waste Management of Hawaii, its general manager and its environmental protection manager.
The indictment alleges the company gave false and outdated information to the state Department of Health that its storm water management system was adequate. It says the company lied to the state about the storm water it discharged off leeward Oahu.
Waste Management of Hawaii attorney Bill McCorriston says the company and two individual defendants acted appropriately throughout the development of the storm water system. He says there may have been minor paperwork mistakes but those don’t amount to crimes.
