DETROIT (AP) - A nearly two-year investigation culminated Wednesday with two Michigan men being charged with robbing, torturing and killing two suburban Detroit teens in 2012.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said Fredrick Young, 25, of Detroit, and Ferlando Hunter, 23, of Jackson, have been charged with the slayings of Westland residents Jacob Kudla and Jourdan Bobbish. The bodies of Bobbish, 17, and Kudla, 18, were found in a field on Detroit’s east side July 27, 2012, five days after they went missing.
Young and Hunter are charged with first-degree murder, torture, armed robbery, unlawful imprisonment and having a firearm during a felony. A not-guilty plea was entered for Young during a Wednesday afternoon video arraignment, and his next hearing will be May 13. Hunter is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday morning.
Prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Maria Miller said she doesn’t believe that the men have been assigned attorneys.
Authorities describe the investigation as extensive, beginning on the morning the teens’ bodies were found in the vacant, trash-strewn field, dressed only in undergarments and bearing gunshot wounds. Specific details of the case will be presented at the preliminary examination, prosecutors said.
Kudla, a Schoolcraft College student known as Jake, and Bobbish, a high school senior, were like brothers and often went to Detroit to visit family members. They were last seen when they left the Detroit home of Kudla’s uncle.
Two men were convicted of stripping the car belonging to Kudla and cleaning it with bleach to hide their fingerprints. Casey Green and Larry Anderson pleaded guilty to larceny, obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence.
The car was found behind a west side apartment building, and its sound system had been removed.
