MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) - Marshalltown police are moving ahead with plans to acquire a 24-foot-long, 10-foot-high military vehicle.
Police Chief Mike Tupper told City Council members Monday his department wants to obtain the Caiman MTV Defensive Vehicle through a military exchange program.
The Marshalltown Times-Republican reports (https://bit.ly/R4HPIU ) the 47,000 pound vehicle, which seats 11 people, is valued at $500,000 but could be obtained at no cost beyond shipping charges. Bringing the vehicle from Sealy, Texas, to Marshalltown would cost $3,500 to $5,000, what that expense covered by seized assets or drug money.
Sgt. Kiel Stevenson says the giant vehicle could help maintain an active crime scene, helping officers get into position.
The council supported the proposal. Council member Joel Greer says he’d be “happy to support anything you do because I trust your judgment.”
