WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Susan Collins and Angus King of Maine say they’re looking for middle ground on a proposal to boost the federal minimum wage.
Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked an election-year Democratic bill that would gradually raise the minimum wage from the current $7.25 hourly minimum to $10.10 over 30 months. The 54-42 vote fell short of what was necessary for the debate to continue.
Afterward, King said people who work hard should have a fair shot at making a living.
He said he’d work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to find common ground because the issue “is too important to fall victim to partisan, election-year politics.” Collins said she’ll continue her efforts to seek a deal with other senators on a lower figure.
