MINDEN, Nev. (AP) - Travelers between the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe are in for three weeks of detours.

The Nevada Department of Transportation says Kingsbury Grade will be closed to traffic beginning Thursday through May 23, right before the Memorial Day holiday.

Travelers will need to use U.S. 50 as a detour, though emergency and public transportation shuttles will continue to have access.

Officials say shutting down the heavily traveled mountain road will allow crews to finish the $15 million reconstruction project quicker, in about 12 to 18 months.

After Memorial Day and through much of the summer, work will be conducted mostly at night, but motorists will have delays and lane closures. The road will be open with one lane in each direction during daytime hours, weekend and holidays.
