SYDNEY (AP) - Ex-Aston Villa midfielder Brett Holman has retired from international football just two weeks before Australia coach Ange Postecoglou is due to announce his squad for the World Cup.

The 30-year-old Holman, now playing for Al Nasr in the United Arab Emirates, earned 63 international caps for Australia. He scored two goals at the 2010 World Cup and played an important role in Australia’s qualifying campaign for Brazil 2014, which kicks off in June.

Holman announced his international retirement in a statement Wednesday, saying “Over the past six months, circumstances have led me to re-think my international career and I have made the difficult decision to step aside from my role with the Socceroos.”
