SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Hampden District Attorney Mark Mastroianni (mass-tree-AHN’-ee) has filed a motion to recuse himself from a case involving a double fatal accident in Holyoke over concerns about his friendship with a relative of one victim.
Moira Murphy and Brian Callahan, both 23-year-old Holyoke residents, died in the crash in September allegedly caused when a Springfield man ran a red light.
A defense lawyer asked the judge to bar Mastroianni from the case because of his friendship with Springfield District Court Judge Robert Murphy, Moira Murphy’s uncle.
The Republican (https://bit.ly/1iBRInv ) reports that even though the judge denied the request, Mastroianni says he handed the case off to the state Attorney General’s office “out of an abundance of caution.”
The case has also been transferred to a judge in Worcester Superior Court.
