RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers has endorsed Thom Tillis for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in North Carolina.

The 2nd District congresswoman gave her public support Wednesday to the state House speaker, who is one of eight GOP candidates in the primary. The winner will take on Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan in the fall.

Ellmers has her own primary Tuesday. She says Tillis has a proven record of making tough decisions to help North Carolina’s economy and bringing what she calls “fiscal sanity to state government.”

The endorsement is the latest dose of momentum for Tillis, who received the full public backing of Gov. Pat McCrory and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday. He is the GOP field’s leading fundraiser.
