COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Columbus city officials are considering a proposal to handle recycling for Army troops stationed at neighboring Fort Benning.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (https://bit.ly/1m98Xop ) officials estimate the city would reap about $230,000 in additional revenues for picking up waste for recycling from 4,200 residential units on the sprawling Army post.
Public Works director Pat Biegler told city council members Tuesday that the municipal recycling center would expect to handle about 59 tons of material per week. Officials say Fort Benning would make recycling mandatory for soldiers and families living on the post and provide them with rolling recycling carts.
Columbus City Manager Isaiah Hugley said he plans to bring a resolution for the council to vote on within the next month.
