BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Education officials in Bridgeport and Stamford are considering a legal fight to prevent new charter schools from moving into those cities.

The Connecticut Post reports (https://bit.ly/1hUdHWB ) Bridgeport’s Board of Education voted 5-4 Tuesday to spend $5,000 to research a legal challenge. Board members say they have been in contact with colleagues in Stamford about joining any lawsuit.

The state Board of Education has approved four new charter schools, including two in Bridgeport and one in Stamford.

Both cities have requested a moratorium on charter schools, saying they could cost the cities millions of dollars in transportation and special education costs.

Proponents say the schools are needed to give students in poor performing districts some better choices.
