TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama has hired former Buffalo head basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon as an assistant.

Crimson Tide coach Anthony Grant announced the hiring to replace Tony Pujol on Wednesday.

Witherspoon spent 14 seasons as Buffalo’s head coach, posting seven winning seasons and a 198-228 record. He was fired on March 15 after a 14-20 season.

Grant says Witherspoon’s “abilities in developing talent and teaching the game are highly respected among his peers.”

Witherspoon has 28 years of coaching experience.

He was named Mid-American Conference coach of the year in 2004. Witherspoon started as Buffalo’s interim coach five games into the 1999-00 season.

UConn athletic director Warde Manuel, who held the same job at Buffalo, says Witherspoon “is someone who can recruit and coach at the highest levels.”
