CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - More than 200 teachers, parents and students streamed into a Camden school board meeting to protest a new kind of privately operated school and looming layoffs.

Tuesday night’s protest was organized by the Camden Education Association teachers union and the pro-public schools group Save Our Schools New Jersey.

Protesters were mostly educators. The Philadelphia Inquirer (https://bit.ly/1ly0Oaz) reported chanted “Save our schools.”

Their district is planning to open New Jersey’s first so-called Renaissance schools, which would be operated by private organizations.

The school district says up to 400 employees will receive layoff notices by May 12 because the district is facing a $75 million shortfall.
