LAREDO, Texas (AP) - A South Texas man who owns sporting goods and weapons stores has been sentenced to more than five years in prison for trying to export hundreds of assault gun magazines to Mexico.
A federal judge in Laredo on Wednesday sentenced 42-year-old Arturo Gonzalez. He was convicted Jan. 9 of three weapons counts in an investigation going back to 2012.
Authorities say more than 600 AK-47 assault rifle magazines in the undercover investigation were seized before reaching Mexico.
Gonzalez, who owns two J.C. Twiss “El Canonazo” sporting apparel and firearm accessories stores in Laredo, must serve 63 months behind bars.
Three other people who pleaded guilty in the weapons scam were sentenced Wednesday to two-year prison terms. A fourth person was sentenced to three years in prison.
