ST. LOUIS (AP) - Portions of southern Illinois are being told to brace for a second round of potentially volatile storms after a possible tornado hit neighboring Missouri.
The National Weather Service says the storm that swept across the St. Louis region Thursday morning caused no injuries or significant damage in the metropolitan area’s Illinois suburbs.
Parts of Scott Air Force Base near Mascoutah, about 25 miles east of St. Louis, were left without power.
Weather Service crews are surveying damage near University City just west of downtown St. Louis, trying to confirm whether a tornado touched down after 5 a.m. About 20 homes there were damaged.
The weather service says there’s a threat that tornadoes could rumble through the region late Thursday afternoon and into the evening.
