MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Legislature is trying to keep members from immediately becoming lobbyists after leaving office.
The Senate voted 32-0 Thursday night to approve changes the House made to a lobbying bill sponsored by Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh, R-Anniston. The bill now goes to the governor for review.
Marsh’s bill prohibits a legislator who leaves office from lobbying House and Senate members for two years.
Currently, a representative who leaves can’t lobby the House for two years, but can immediately lobby the Senate. Also, a senator who leaves the Senate can’t lobby the Senate for two years, but can immediately lobby the House.
Marsh proposed the bill after three Republican legislators resigned last year and took jobs with either lobbying firms or political organizations.
