LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Lafayette police have arrested a 20-year-old woman in the January death of her 5-month-old daughter, whose suffocation was initially believed to have happened accidentally.

Cpl. Paul Mouton tells The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1dPH01v ) officers arrested 20-year-old Raven Senegal, of Lafayette, in Alexandria Wednesday on a first-degree murder warrant issued Monday in the baby’s death.

On Jan. 29, when detectives arrived at the hospital where the child was taken, “they were advised that the child had died from an accidental suffocation,” Mouton said.

Senegal told investigators a plastic shopping bag somehow ended up covering the baby’s head earlier that day at the infant’s home, Mouton said.

The baby stopped breathing and was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Mouton said he couldn’t comment on how investigators believe the bag came to cover the baby’s head, but Senegal is accused of being responsible for the baby’s death.

It was unclear whether Senegal has an attorney.
