A man accused of firing off a gun at Kent State University in Ohio has been taken into custody at a nearby hospital, just a few hours after witnesses reported seeing him shoot into the ground.
Witnesses said that the man was seen arguing with a woman shortly after 8 p.m. on Wednesday near Bowman Hall. They said the man then took out a gun and fired it into the ground, fleeing from the scene and sending the campus into lockdown mode for a brief time, The Associated Press reported.
He was apprehended at the hospital shortly before midnight. Police say they don’t know why he was at the facility. Nobody was injured in the incident, AP reported.
University President Lester Lefton said a witness reported that the woman was overheard telling the suspected gunman “no” before he fired his weapon, AP reported.
Neither the shooter nor the woman have been identified. It’s not clear yet what charges will be brought — if any — against the shooter, AP said.
Kent State is the same university where National Guard members shot and killed four students during a Vietnam War protest in May 1970.
