Sportscaster Bob Costas — who’s waded into the political realm on several occasions in recent years — has now issued the Second Amendment rights crowd a bold challenge: Find me evidence of athletes doing good things with guns.
“Here’s what I would say to anybody who any time they hear the word guns automatically goes off, like, ’oh, they’re going to repeal the Second Amendment,’ ” Mr. Costas said, during an appearance on NBC’s “Late Night” with Seth Meyers, as reported by The Daily Caller.
He went on: “Let’s make a bet, you and me. Let’s say over the next five years — we’ll do a Google search, we’ll have an independent party monitor it — you keep track of how many good and constructive things are associated with athletes having a gun, and I’ll keep track of all the tragedies and criminality and folly. And let’s see who comes out ahead or behind as the case may be. These things are directly connected.”
Mr. Costas also said that America is “a culture where people who are angry … or people who have an extreme view are more apt to weigh in” on political and cultural issues of the day than those with more level-headed views.
“And they have more ways than ever to do it,” he said, The Daily Caller reported. “And people who approve of it or like it say, ’Hey, that was good’ when they see you on the street, you know?”
Mr. Costas, who has publicly spoken against guns on numerous occasions, also brought forth his political views at the Olympics about Russian President Vladimir Putin, characterizing him as a great peacemaker in Iran and Syria.
