SALISBURY, Md. (AP) - Officials in Salisbury say they want more police officers patrolling city streets.
Mayor Jim Ireton and Police Chief Barbara Duncan announced a plan to add 15 officers to patrol duty over the next 18 months on Monday.
There are currently 92 officers in a city where the population grows to about 140,000 to 160,000 during the day. Duncan says that’s not enough.
The plan calls for hiring 10 new officers and shifting five working as a recruiter and dispatchers back to patrol duty. The department would then hire five civilians to take over that work. The number of officers would be reduced after six years once neighborhoods are more stable.
Ireton says the city council will hear budget proposals related to the plan on Thursday.
