TAYLOR, Mich. (AP) - A 23-year-old man has been charged with torturing and abusing his 6-month-old son at their suburban Detroit home.

Nicholas A. Spirdione was arraigned Tuesday in Taylor District Court, and Judge Geno Salomone ordered him held on a $1.5 million bond.

Spirdione has a May 5 probable cause hearing on the charges, which carry a maximum penalty of life in prison. He’s asked for a court-appointed lawyer.

Corie Stahl tells TV reporters that the victim is her son Jessie. She says doctors performed surgery to relieve swelling on his brain.

Police say paramedics were called Saturday afternoon to the family’s house in Taylor where Jessie was having trouble staying conscious and was breathing with difficulty.
