AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Gov. Paul LePage has vetoed 16 more bills, including two attempts by Democrats to expand Medicaid under the federal health care law.
Among the bills rejected by the Republican governor Tuesday include Democratic House Speaker Mark Eves’ bill to have the state seek permission from the federal government to use the Medicaid funds to help residents buy private health insurance, instead.
LePage also vetoed a separate Medicaid expansion proposal. He says the expansion will be too costly for Maine.
LePage rejected bills to overhaul the state’s concealed handgun permit system and to allow the state’s forest rangers to carry firearms. LePage says he supports arming rangers, but that the bill doesn’t include enough funding for adequate training.
Lawmakers return Thursday to consider the 46 bills recently vetoed by LePage.
