GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Police in Goodyear say equipment containing small amounts of radioactive material has been stolen.

They say someone stole a Humboldt 5001 Nuclear Density Gauge that was secured in the bed of a pickup truck early Monday.

The device is commonly used in the construction industry and is housed in a yellow case inside a metal diamond-plate box.

Police say the item contains small amounts of radioactive material encased within the device.

If tampered with, it could pose health risks with prolonged direct exposure.

The device does have a safety mechanism designed to protect people when the gauge is being used as intended.

Police say the area in which the device was taken has been monitored, no abnormal radioactive levels have been detected and there’s no immediate danger in the area.
