FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Sentencing has been delayed until July for a failed South Florida congressional candidate in a campaign finance fraud case with ties to former Rep. David Rivera.

Justin Lamar Sternad was supposed to be sentenced Tuesday, but a federal judge granted his request for a delay. The new date is July 11.

Sternad previously pleaded guilty to several campaign finance law violations, including accepting illegal contributions and filing false reports. He faces a 15-year maximum prison term.

Sternad’s lawyer says he needs more time to cooperate with prosecutors in the probe, including a possible summer trial of Rivera associate Ana Alliegro.

The case involves allegations that Rivera, a Republican, secretly financed Sternad’s campaign to weaken his Democratic rival, Joe Garcia. Rivera has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
