INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Gov. Mike Pence is urging motorists to be aware of motorcyclists on Indiana roads and has proclaimed May as motorcycle safety and awareness month.

The governor’s office says statistics show that multiple-vehicle crashes account for about 75 percent of all motorcycle accidents and that in two-thirds of those accidents the driver of the other vehicle caused the collision by violating the motorcyclists’ right-of-way.

A release from Pence’s office says 92 percent of accident-involved riders were self-taught and have no formal training.

Motorcycle training and safety group ABATE of Indiana is planning a motorcycle awareness rally May 1 on Monument Circle in Indianapolis.
