RIVERDALE, Iowa (AP) - Online voters have selected “Rudy” as the name for an eaglet in eastern Iowa watched by millions on a website trained on the birds’ nest.

The Quad-City Times reports (https://bit.ly/1fKyNXJ) a contest by Alcoa Davenport Works to name the month-old bird drew more than 6 million votes.

Alco spokesman John Riches says the number of voters was inflated by automated voting, but officials opted to go with the results, anyway. They may change the voting rules next year.

Rudy was among eight finalists selected among 2,000 suggested names. Rudy was the nickname of Davenport police Sgt. Kevin Marxen, who died suddenly in February.

Rudy and its parents, Liberty and Justice, are watched by millions of viewers via a camera perched beside their nest at the Alcoa Davenport Works in Riverdale.
