ELMA, N.Y. (AP) - Two-time Olympic gold medalist and Western New York Flash midfielder Carli Lloyd has been suspended for two games by the National Women’s Soccer League for using excessive force in a game against Chicago.
Lloyd was issued a yellow card for pulling down Red Stars midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo from behind by her jersey in the first half of the Flash’s 1-0 loss at Chicago on April 19. As DiBernardo was going down, Lloyd then swung around and struck the Red Stars player in the face.
Lloyd called the play “inexcusable” and apologized to DiBernardo in a statement released by the Flash.
