RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory appears to be getting more behind Thom Tillis’ U.S. Senate candidacy a week before the Republican primary.
McCrory’s office confirmed Monday he would attend an announcement Tuesday in Raleigh organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. A chamber media advisory says Tillis and its national political director also will be there for the announcement about Tillis’ Senate campaign.
The chamber’s political committee decided earlier this month to back the House speaker in the eight-candidate primary. A person familiar with the process said a formal endorsement would happen later.
A McCrory spokesman did not respond to a question on whether the governor would make his own endorsement. McCrory told a newspaper a few weeks ago Tillis “has the best chance” to win in the general election.
