WILTON, N.Y. (AP) - The upstate New York historic site where former President Ulysses S. Grant died will be open this summer despite the impending closure of the state prison located next door.

The Grant Cottage State Historic Site is located on the grounds of the Mount McGregor state prison, one of four prisons being closed in July.

Grant died at a cottage on top of Mount McGregor in Wilton in July 1885, soon after completing his memoirs.

A nonprofit organization has staffed the cottage, which is managed by the state parks office. The head of the local organization tells the Daily Gazette of Schenectady (https://bit.ly/1j7oHVm ) that state officials have assured the group the prison’s closure will have no impact on the cottage when it opens for its season on Memorial Day.
