PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Former Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox says he intends to return to the General Assembly after he resigned his leadership post following raids on his Statehouse office and home.

Fox told WJAR-TV Monday ( https://bit.ly/1j9BrLk ) he has a responsibility to his district. He says he hasn’t returned to the legislature yet because he didn’t want to be a distraction during the transition.

The Democrat stepped down as speaker in March, a day after federal and state authorities conducted the raids as part of a criminal investigation. Officials have declined to say what the probe is about and whether Fox is a target.

Fox did not address the investigation but told the station the situation feels like a “kick in the gut.”

Fox represents Providence’s East Side.
