ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says he’s considering requiring applicants for unemployment benefits to undergo drug testing.
Deal told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (https://bit.ly/1mSROfU ) Monday that he’d also set aside money to fund treatment programs for failing applicants. The governor says the state wouldn’t withhold benefits from those who fail the tests, but would require them to participate in state-funded treatment programs.
Deal says the state’s failure to launch treatment programs for the recipients of public benefits could lead to unemployment applicants being unable to find stable employment because of drug-related issues.
The governor says he’s working with state Department of Labor Commissioner, Mark Butler, to explore changes to the state’s unemployment benefits system.
