SHELBY, N.Y. (AP) - A cold case investigation by state police has identified the body of a Florida woman found more than three decades ago in western New York.

The victim is Shari Lynne Ball. She was 20 when her family told the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office in June 1983 she was missing.

Ball told her family she was going to New York to begin a modeling career but disappeared shortly after she left. Her body was found later that year by a hunter off the shoulder of a state highway in Orleans County. It was exhumed last year to obtain DNA for analysis, and a match was made to a family member.

The cause of death has not been determined, but police believe she was likely a victim of foul play.
