ESPANOLA, N.M. (AP) - The Board of Regents of Northern New Mexico College has approved a $32 million budget that comes at the expense of several jobs, programs and a campus day care center.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports (https://bit.ly/1nTmEVp) that the vote by regents Saturday in Espanola drew immediate criticism.
Officials say the elimination of three educational programs and several faculty and staff positions will save $500,000 for an already financially-strapped school.
Board President Rosario “Chayo” Garcia is also calling for a freeze on hiring and travel expenses.
The college serves more than 1,500 full-time and part-time students.
The positions being cut include seven faculty jobs, two part-time staff jobs and three that are already vacant.
Most of the cuts are in the automotive, construction and radiology programs.
