The NAACP’s Los Angeles chapter apparently has decided it won’t be giving Clippers owner Don Sterling a lifetime achievement award in light of racist comments he allegedly made toward his girlfriend, V. Stiviano.
In audio obtained by TMZ and Deadspin, a man can be heard complaining about a photo of Miss Stiviano and Lakers legend Magic Johnson.
“It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people,” the man, alleged to be Mr. Sterling, says in the recording.
When confronted by Miss Stiviano by the fact that many Clippers players are black, the man responds by saying, “I support them and give them food and clothes and cars and houses. Who gives it to them? Does someone else give it to them?”
Lorraine Miller, NAACP interim vice president, said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” that Mr. Sterling will not be given an award, the Huffington Post reported.
However, as of Sunday afternoon, the group’s website still says the Clippers owner will honored at a May event commemorating the NAACP’s 100th anniversary.
President Obama condemned the comments Sunday, saying: “When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don’t really have to do anything, you just let them talk. That’s what happened here.”
