ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) - Nearly 400 people gathered in a suburban Chicago church to honor the father and son killed last week at a hospital in Afghanistan.

The Chicago Sun-Times (https://bit.ly/1fm4ZG6 ) reports that at Sunday’s service, Pastor Colin Smith of Orchard Evangelical Church in Arlington Heights praised John Gabel and his father, Gary Gabel, for their willingness to “put themselves at a higher risk because of their faith.” The elder Gabel was a member of the congregation.

The Gabels and Dr. Jerry Umanos of Chicago were fatally shot by a security guard at a Kabul hospital where Umanos worked. John Gabel’s wife was injured.

John Gabel was a guest lecturer at Kabul University. Last week, Umanos’ wife said her husband was giving his friends a tour of the hospital when they were shot.
