BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A plan to begin construction on a new bus station in downtown Burlington is on track to begin in just under a year.

Project Manager Steve Carlson told the Chittenden County Transportation Authority’s Board of Commissioners the plan is to begin construction in March of 2015 with the goal of having it completed by December 2015.

The new transit station is slated to be built in the center of St. Paul Street in downtown Burlington. It would replace the current Cherry Street pick-up and drop-off point.

CCTA’s Meredith Birkett says the new station will be a major improvement from the Cherry Street terminal, which was built in 1981 to accommodate three or four buses.

“The current facility was undersized on the day it opened 33 years ago,” said Birkett. “We’ve been struggling with that for 33 years.”

The Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/RT1Tza) reports the project is estimated to cost about $9.7 million.

Moving the bus terminal to the middle of St. Paul Street means the road will be closed to through traffic. The exception will be drivers using the parking garage at the Zampieri Building as part of an agreement with the Department of Buildings and General Services, said project manager Steve Carlson.
