CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - The mayor of Carlsbad and other local leaders are asking the New Mexico governor for help in patrolling highways.

The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports (https://bit.ly/1hBSUar) that Mayor Dale Janway is appealing to Gov. Susana Martinez for more state police on roadways in the wake of four fatalities this month.

In a letter sent to Martinez on Wednesday, Janway says a lack of law enforcement on more remote highways has led to more “recklessness and complacency” among drivers.

Janway cites the deaths of two people in a collision on U.S. 285 on Monday as a recent example.

Carlsbad City Councilman Jason Shirley is also asking state transportation officials to put up more checkpoints along the highway.

Calls to Martinez’s office seeking comment were not immediately returned.
