DARRINGTON, Wash. (AP) - United Way of Snohomish County and the state Department of Commerce are teaming up to keep Darrington’s largest employer open while State Route 530 is repaired after the Oso landslide.
Truckers have been forced to take the long way around since the slide and those extra fuel costs have made it difficult to keep Hampton Mill operating.
The state and United Way are both contributing $150,000 to buy fuel cards for truckers serving the mill.
The Washington Department of Transportation says it hopes to have one lane of Highway 530 open to local traffic by fall. Officials say it’s too early to know whether the road will be drivable once the debris has been removed.
