HERKIMER, N.Y. (AP) - An upstate New York man who authorities say charged at a state trooper with a large knife is in critical condition after being shot.
State police say Saturday the trooper responded to a 911 report a disturbance at a Herkimer home Friday night and found David Pope charging at the trooper with a knife.
That’s when they say the trooper fired one .45 caliber round, striking the 32-year-old man in the abdomen.
An ambulance took Pope to a hospital where he underwent surgery.
State police and local prosecutors are investigating the shooting. They say charges against Pope are pending.
The Observer-Dispatch of Utica reports (https://bit.ly/1lhn6gz ) Pope was arrested in 2009 for striking his father and girlfriend with a tire iron at a Walmart.
