TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Thousands of runners and walkers are expected to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Pat’s Run this morning.

Saturday’s 4.2 mile race in downtown Tempe that honors NFL star turned soldier Pat Tillman first began in 2004.

The run will start and end at Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium.

The route’s length is inspired by the football jersey number he sported while playing for ASU.

In 2002, Tillman put his career with the Arizona Cardinals on hold to join the elite Army Rangers.

He died by friendly fire in Afghanistan in April 2004.

Proceeds from the annual race go toward scholarships for military veterans and their spouses.

Tempe officials say drivers should expect street closures and restrictions in the area between 6:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
