FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A 3-year-old Cumberland County boy who was shot as he slept in the bedroom of a mobile home has died.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s office said Ahmed Daniels was pronounced dead at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center on Saturday. Spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said the child’s body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday for an autopsy.

Investigators determined that someone fired several gunshots into the Fayetteville home early Friday morning. One of the stray bullets pierced the wall of the bedroom where the child was sleeping. Ahmed was struck and never regained consciousness.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the case as a murder and have been canvassing the community surrounding the home for information.
