INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri proudly declared his support for the Second Amendment Friday at the NRA’s annual meetings, saying firearms have been a big part of his life for as long as he can remember.
He also tweaked two future Hall of Fame-bound former teammates — with whom he won all four of his Super Bowl rings — for their inferior quarterback ratings.
“I think we can all agree the traditions that we share are real touchdown moments in life,” Mr. Vinatieri said at Lucas Oil Stadium, where he also works his day job much of the time. “Notice that I said touchdown and not field goals? My quarterback rating is better than Peyton Manning’s and Tom Brady’s.”
Technically, it’s true. Mr. Vinatieri noted that the sole passing attempt in his career was a touchdown pass on a fake field goal in 2004 when he was playing for the New England Patriots, for a quarterback rating of 104.
Mr. Manning, who led the Colts to a Super Bowl win in the 2006 season and now plays for the Denver Broncos, has a career rating of 97.2. Mr. Brady, who has three Super Bowl rings, has a career rating of 95.7.
“Trust me — I’ve let both of those guys know,” Mr. Vinatieri said.
Mr. Vinatieri actually appears to have sold himself a bit short. His career statistics on multiple sports reference sites show that he has a rating of 122.9, though he’s significantly behind both of his former teammates in passing attempts and completions.
