SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A soldier from El Paso assigned to a South Texas post has been killed and three others hurt in a freak accident during training in Guatemala.

The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala on Thursday announced the death of 24-year-old Spec. Hernaldo Beltran Jr. Beltran was a radio operator assigned to the 56th Signal Battalion at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

Officials say Beltran died Tuesday when a large tree branch fell on some soldiers working on an engineering project in Los Limones during the Beyond the Horizons joint military exercise.

Three other soldiers suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Lt. Col. Carol McClelland on Friday had no immediate details on the injured soldiers but said they are not from Beltran’s unit.
