SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Dakotas-based Sanford Health plans to begin construction within months on a multimillion-dollar breast cancer facility in Sioux Falls.
Construction will start by October on the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Center, and it will open by January 2017, Sanford USD Medical Center President Paul Hanson told the Argus Leader newspaper (https://argusne.ws/1mLkcTy ).
The 48,000-square foot building will cost between $25 million and $30 million. It was part of a 2011 announcement in which philanthropist T. Denny Sanford pledged to give the health system bearing his name $100 million to find a cure for breast cancer. His mother, Edith, died of the disease when he was 4 years old.
Sanford Health is based in Sioux Falls and in Fargo, N.D., where it operates the Roger Maris Cancer Center, named for the late New York Yankees slugger who grew up in Fargo. Sanford also plans to expand that facility by 2017.
The breast cancer facility will consolidate services Sanford now offers in various locations.
“Women can receive all their care in one stop,” Hanson said.
The breast cancer facility will sit between Sanford’s Van Demark Building, which houses orthopedics and sports medicine, and Sanford’s existing cancer center. A corridor will connect the three buildings. Early drawings show the building to be three stories tall from street level with a tower to include the likeness of Edith Sanford.
Sanford Health bills itself as the nation’s largest not-for-profit rural health care provider, with locations in 126 communities in nine states.
