ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) - A suburban Detroit mayor has withdrawn as a candidate for the congressional seat opening up with the retirement of Republican Rep. Mike Rogers.

Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett said Friday it’d be “counterproductive” to have a divisive GOP primary among three Rochester Hills residents. His decision leaves former state Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop and state Rep. Tom McMillin running in the primary for the Republican-leaning seat.

Barnett says he was humbled to be endorsed by Oakland County Executive Brooks Patterson and Sheriff Mike Bouchard. He wants to ensure the 8th Congressional District is represented by a “strong conservative.”

Rogers has endorsed Bishop.

Democrats running include Ingham County Treasurer Eric Schertzing, former state demographer Ken Darga, Central Michigan University associate professor Susan Grettenberger and Jeffrey Hank.
